It might seem like such a simple thing, but brushing is key to preventing cavities and making sure your smile is shiny and bright. As you get older, years of bad brushing habits may just be a part of your life now, at this point, you might not even know that you have bad brushing habits. We can all afford to improve our brushing technique and make our smiles sing. NewSmile® is here to teach you how to brush your teeth properly and to show you a few techniques that you might not have known about before.
How you brush your teeth might seem intuitive and something that should be easy. However, too often you get into a rut as you brush your teeth and forget or simply neglect the most important and basic things. That is why reevaluating how you brush your teeth is always important. Here are some of the very basic things that need to happen when you brush.
It might seem like a no-brainer, but when you brush you need to clean every surface of your teeth, especially focusing on the surfaces where you do most of your chewing. The most common recommended amount of time you should take to brush your teeth is two full minutes. That’s a full ten seconds longer than “Fell in Love With a Girl” the hit song from The White Stripes. It might be daring to say, but it seems like most adults are guilty of never reaching the two-minute mark. Colgate even recommends using a stopwatch so that you can get a sense of exactly how long one hundred and twenty seconds is.
When you brush your teeth you should be holding your toothbrush at a forty-five-degree angle to your gums. This is so that you can properly clean both your gums and your teeth. Brushing your gums keeps them healthy and helps to avoid gingivitis.
To reach the inside surfaces of your front teeth you will need to tilt your brush vertically so that all those surfaces will get properly cleaned.
Holding your toothbrush in a fist might seem natural, but it might not actually be the best for your teeth. For those of us who have sensitive gums, or gums that inflame easily, it is best to hold your toothbrush with your fingertips. This results in a softer brushing stroke and is kinder to your sensitive gums. Holding your toothbrush this way also helps you be more conscious of your brushing and helps prevent you from going into autopilot.
To properly clean your teeth, short and gentle back and forth strokes are the way to go. Each of these strokes should be, as the American Dental Association describes, “tooth-wide” strokes so that you are making sure to clean the whole tooth as you perform this brush for each of your teeth. Whether you are cleaning the front or the inside surfaces of your teeth, this is the stroke to go with.
Okay, now that we’ve reviewed how to hold your toothbrush and the proper brushing techniques, here are some of the things that most adults forget while brushing:

A perfect smile is at the top of most people’s wish list, and with aligners, achieving your ideal smile is as simple as ever. Along with the responsibility of properly wearing your aligners comes the responsibility of keeping them properly clean, but do you really know how to do that? A toothbrush and toothpaste alone simply won’t cut it, but with the help of these simple steps you can easily keep your aligners clean and your mouth fresh.
When used properly, an aligner spends a lot of time in your mouth, which makes keeping it clean that much more important. An unclean or improperly cleaned aligner can easily accumulate bacteria that can cause dental problems, including cavities and bad breath. While the proper use of your aligner is essential to creating your best possible smile, the proper cleaning and care is just as important to be sure your aligner remains in good condition throughout the duration of use. This way you can rest easy your aligner won’t leave you with anything more than straight teeth in the end.
Properly cleaning your aligner is relatively simple, it just requires a few steps beyond simply brushing it and storing it in a safe place. The steps necessary to clean your aligner are very similar to the steps you’d take when cleaning an aligner. Here are 3 simple steps to keep both in excellent condition:
In addition to giving you a place to store your aligners where you won’t lose them between uses, soaking your aligners is an excellent way to make sure these appliances only serve their intended purpose of straightening your teeth, without leaving you prone to future dental problems.
Your smile is often the first impression you make on a person, so make sure it’s a good one. Are you ready to straighten your teeth and achieve that award-winning smile you’ve always dreamed of? With aligners you can do just that—it’s simple as wearing trays as advised and caring for them properly.

Growing up we all heard the mantras, “Don’t eat too much sugar or you’ll ruin your teeth,” or, “You’ll ruin your appetite,” from our parents. Even though we ignored our parents and did it anyway, there was more wisdom to their warnings than we realized. In fact, there are some foods that even break your teeth. This goes beyond bad food for teeth, this is about foods that damage teeth, and could end up with an emergency visit to the dentist. NewSmile is here to warn you about five foods that could break your teeth.
Yep, you read that right. Something as simple and innocent as ice can damage your teeth! Even though ice may not contain any sugars that can create cavities chewing it can damage your teeth’s enamel.
Okay, this one won’t crack your teeth (unless you’re chewing on the can which would be a whole other blog post), but sugary sodas weaken your teeth’s enamel making them softer and more susceptible to cracking or breaking. Drink soda in moderation to prevent the softening of your teeth and the risk of breaking them on these other foods.
Biting into an un-pitted olive is dangerous when you don’t realize that it’s not pitted. That’s when crack you go to the dentist.
Yep, everyone’s favorite snack at the movies is also infamous for cracking teeth. Chomping down on an un-popped kernel will crack your tooth. You don’t have to get rid of the popcorn when you go to the movies, just be more careful.
This one you really have to be careful with. Crunching on almonds can chip your teeth if you are not careful. They may be delicious but eat almonds with caution.
When you damage your teeth you may throw off their alignment. When that happens, be sure to buy NewSmile teeth aligners to help correct your smile.

One of the most common questions we hear is whether or not NewSmile® aligners hurt. Some may know that traditional metal braces may not be sharp or intense, there is definitely pain that comes along with any form of orthodontic treatment. NewSmile® aligners are conceived to be pain-free, and while they will be painful, they are a lot less painful than metal braces.
But that doesn’t mean that NewSmile® doesn’t hurt. When moving teeth and straightening the bite, there's bound to be some pain. How much does NewSmile® hurt? And what are some ways to relieve that pain? Here’s what you need to know about NewSmile®, the pain level, and how to alleviate any pain you might feel during your treatment:
Do NewSmile® Clear Aligners Hurt?
NewSmile® clear aligners will cause some discomfort. While everyone is different and will feel varying amounts of pain (some will feel more pain than others), they are less painful than traditional metal braces. The good news is that the pain fades once your teeth adjust to wearing the aligners. Some of the sources of pain are from the soreness that comes from the aligners pressing against the teeth, and the pain that comes with having the aligners in your mouth.
With traditional metal braces, some of the pain you feel comes from brackets rubbing against the interior of the mouth, and placement of the wire. Especially during the first few weeks of treatment, before the mouth has developed callouses to combat sensitivity, the pressing, rubbing, and scratching of the metal components against your mouth can be very uncomfortable. The same can be said for NewSmile® aligners, but on a smaller scale. The edges of the aligners, while not sharp, can be irritating to your gums and the insides of your lips as your mouth gets used to wearing them. After starting your treatment, the first couple of weeks will allow your mouth to adjust to the feeling of wearing your aligners and will develop the necessary callouses to prevent irritation. By the time you need to switch out your first set of aligners for the next stage, your mouth is likely to be fully adjusted and you won’t experience any peripheral pain.
This doesn’t mean, of course, that your NewSmile® will be completely pain free. Because the whole point of NewSmile® is to shift your teeth into a straighter, healthier smile, the aligners apply pressure on the teeth so they move into their new places. The soreness from moving your teeth may feel extreme during the first few days after putting on a new set of aligners, but the pain will decrease since your teeth have shifted accordingly, and the cycle will repeat when it’s time to put in the next set. Few NewSmile® wearers would describe this sensation as pain, per se. For most, it’s simply discomfort you get used with a few weeks of adjustment.
For pain that feel like a poking sensation from your aligners, this is pain caused by rough or sharp edges on your aligners. If you run your tongue along the edge of the aligner and you get cut, ensure you file that area by rounding any thin and sharp areas. Pain caused by improper finishing of the aligners are completely avoidable and can be easily fixed by using the nail file we provide with your aligners.
For some wearers, going through the pain for the few days each month is the best way to handle the discomfort. Again, most find they only experience minor to mild discomfort for the first few days after changing to a new set of aligners, and if the discomfort is concerning to you, we recommend speaking with your dentist or doctor. For those that have more chronic discomfort, here are some methods that may help:
Pain killers are a good place to start. Most people have their preferred pain killer and know how much to take. Depending on the type of pain, some may work better than others. For example, if pain during the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners are caused by inflammation and irritation from aligners being pressed against your teeth, a pain killer used to reduce inflammation would work best.
On the other hand, if you feel pain when tensing your jaw or grinding your teeth, a pain killer that relaxes muscles may be a better choice. Also, a little bit of pressure can help to relieve tension in your teeth, so don’t be afraid to chew on something. Cold or hot drinks may also help to soothe aches in the teeth.

When you set out to research the best options for straightening your teeth, you are sure to encounter many misconceptions about invisible aligners, or possibly even Invisalign. Since braces have been around much longer, you may think they are still your only option. But methods and technology have come a long way, and we’re here to debunk the common myths about Invisalign-style treatments so you can determine whether it is the right choice for straightening your teeth.
As the new kid on the block, invisible alignment methods get a reputation for being weaker than braces. Many people think that since they are made of plastic rather than metal, they couldn’t possibly have the same power to fix your teeth.
In reality, invisible aligners are capable of fixing even the most complicated cases of crooked teeth. Severe underbites and overbites, crowding, and even smiles with a missing tooth can be corrected by invisible aligners. As long as you are treated by an experienced, knowledgeable dental professional, you will see similar, if not better results with a treatment such as Invisalign, as opposed to braces.
Learn more about how clear aligners work.
The time it takes to achieve a beautifully straight smile will vary between cases, but invisible aligners are often able to straighten teeth even faster than braces. In general, an Invisalign-type treatment takes about the same amount of time as traditional braces. Your teeth move at essentially the same pace with either one, and the length of treatment will depend on how crooked your teeth are.
At NewSmile, the average treatment time is six months.
You should never pay more for invisible alignment than you would for braces. Straightening your teeth with invisible aligners will require either the same number of dentist or orthodontist appointments as braces, or far fewer.
NewSmile's invisible teeth aligners cost an average of 75% less than other teeth straightening methods.
Most insurance companies will cover Invisalign-style treatments in the same way they would cover conventional braces. If you have an orthodontic benefit, you are likely eligible for financial assistance for invisible aligners. Check with your insurance company to find out what kind of orthodontic coverage is included in your policy, and work with your dental professional to come up with a payment plan that works for you.
It is never too late to love your smile. You deserve to experience joy with confidence and never feel like you need to hide your mouth.
If you’re worried about people judging you for having metal brackets on your teeth past adolescence, invisible aligners may be the perfect solution. They are made from clear plastic that most people will never notice.
In the beginning, you may notice you speak with a slight lisp. After a couple of days, you will get used to your aligners and they shouldn’t have any impact on the way you speak. As long as you are following the treatment plan laid out by your dental professional and keeping your aligners in, you will quickly forget you’re even wearing them.
A few simple care taking steps to ensure your clear aligners stay clear.
Don’t let the myths about invisible aligners scare you. If you are interested in straightening your teeth, invisible alignment may be the quickest, most affordable, and least noticeable option. If you’re ready to find out more, complete your smile assessment today.

As an effective braces alternative for getting a straight smile, invisible aligners and retainers are a series of dental devices that fit tightly over the teeth to encourage the teeth to move into alignment by putting slight pressure on the teeth. Because of their low-profile, affordability, and effectiveness, invisible aligners are often a recommended solution for teenage and adult patients looking to improve the straightness of their teeth. After determining you want to invest in invisible aligners, order an impression kit from NewSmile® to make your first mold of your teeth.

Despite the fact that invisible aligners work in stages and require a commitment on your part, they are remarkably easy to use. The process is simple; after ordering the NewSmile® Impression Kit, you’ll follow the easy-to-understand directions to complete molds of teeth and send the kit back using the included, prepaid shipping label. Once the kit arrives at NewSmile, alignment experts scan your mold to create a preview of what you can expect your teeth to look like when the process is complete. Upon your approval, NewSmile produces your aligners and mails them back directly to you.
From this point forward, you’ll wear your NewSmile® aligners continuously until your teeth have reached optimal straightness. There are a number of reasons a person can have crooked teeth. Maybe their mouth is too small for their teeth, causing crowding and overlapping. Maybe their upper and lower jaws are different sizes and improperly aligned, causing an overbite, underbite, or jaw protrusion. Maybe their parents also have crooked teeth, and they inherited the trait from them.
Regardless of the reason for crooked teeth, it’s important to know how crooked teeth affect health. When teeth are crowded, spaced out, or misaligned, it can become very difficult to clean adequately between them, causing a buildup of plaque and an increased risk of gum disease. These issues can be alleviated by regular dental appointments, but as long as teeth are crooked, oral health problems such as cavities and plaque buildup will continue to crop up.
While crooked teeth are often as healthy as straight teeth, the issues lie between the teeth. When teeth are straight, they are usually evenly spaced out, leaving enough room in between for effective flossing, brushing, and mouth rinsing. But when teeth are crooked, some teeth may be uncomfortably close to others, making it difficult to floss or brush between them. This creates an environment where bacteria thrive.
While it’s important for everyone to feel comfortable with their appearance, crooked teeth can affect more than just self-esteem — they can lead to some serious health problems. When left untreated, crooked teeth can lead to the following:
Cavities: Straight teeth are often easier to clean than crooked teeth, as crooked teeth make it more difficult to reach all of the nooks and crannies of your mouth with a toothbrush and floss. When plaque builds up, it can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and more.
Overall health risks: Crooked teeth can affect so much more than your breath, self-esteem, or chewing. Dental issues caused by plaque buildup can lead to harmful oral infections, which may lead to serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and pneumonia. It’s important to catch issues like plaque buildup, tooth decay, and cavities before they develop into something more severe.
Having straight teeth is about a lot more than having a beautiful smile and feeling confident. Straight teeth can also mean less negative health effects, as crooked teeth health problems can be common. Besides looking beautiful and boosting confidence, straight teeth allow for better oral hygiene, which can reduce bacteria and plaque buildup, meaning less cavities.
If you’re taking the time to read this blog post, you’re probably already thinking about how to straighten your crooked teeth. The good news is that today’s technology and dental advancements have made it possible for anyone to get the smile they love in a way that feels comfortable.
Metal braces are well-known as the customary solution to crooked teeth, but they’re not the only option anymore. People wanting straighter teeth don’t have to suffer through painful metal brackets, awkward smiles, and frequent orthodontist appointments. Instead, adults and teens alike can use clear aligners, which are virtually invisible and offer the same benefits of traditional metal braces.
Clear aligners are a popular alternative to metal braces. They gradually straighten crooked teeth over time, and can even be taken out when you eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Clear aligners are a great solution for those who want to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile without committing to the time and expense of traditional braces.
One of the greatest things about modern technology is that you have more options than ever before with your dental care. Now, you can customize your orthodontic treatment to better fit your lifestyle and schedule. With NewSmile®, you don’t even have to leave your house to fix your crooked teeth. You won’t have any trips to the orthodontist’s office, and you won’t have to pay nearly as much as you would for traditional braces.
If you are feeling less than confident about your crooked teeth, NewSmile® is here to help. Our at-home teeth straightening allows people to fix crooked teeth, gaps, overcrowding, and more in a matter of months.
If you’re ready to fix your crooked teeth, improve your oral health, and boost your confidence, get started with your NewSmile® Smile Assessment. Your beautiful smile is just a few steps away.

We all seem to have a friend who was simply born with perfectly straight teeth, but that certainly isn’t the norm. Most people develop some degree of crooked teeth throughout their lifetime because there are so many factors that can cause them to crowd or come in at an angle.
If you have crooked teeth, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, you’re part of the majority, and in many cases there isn’t anything you could have done to prevent it, and asking "why do I have crooked teeth?"
We can’t pick our parents, but they have a big role in our lives starting with our genetic makeup. Sometimes poor jaw development or a small mouth are simply inherited (thanks, mom).
A person born with a misaligned jaw may develop irritating underbites, overbites, and crossbites. With an underbite, the lower teeth fall in front of the upper teeth when the mouth and jaw are closed. An overbite means the upper teeth are too far over the lower teeth, and a crossbite involves at least one tooth that is tilting toward either the cheek or tongue.
With the teeth out of position, they tend to stick out. These conditions can also make it difficult to chew and cause headaches.
Being born with a small mouth is another genetic misfortune that can cause our teeth to crowd and move around to make room for each other.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association looks into orofacial myo-functional disorders (OMDs) because they often lead to problems with tongue movement and speech. They define OMDs as “abnormal movement patterns of the face and mouth,” such as:
It takes some time for babies to learn how to control their tongues. You’ve probably noticed the way they tend to push out their tongue when they talk, drink, or eat. But if they continue those behaviours for too long, they won’t develop the necessary muscles and bones in their face and mouth.
While sucking on thumbs and fingers has a calming and soothing effect on young children, it can affect teeth alignment. Even pacifiers and bottles can have a negative impact on a child’s teeth if they are used for too long.
When you think of respiratory issues, you probably don’t think about how they impact teeth. But common allergies and asthma can lead to prolonged periods of open-mouth breathing, which contributes to jaw misalignment, incorrect facial development, and crooked teeth.
Any crash, fall, or fight can lead to facial trauma that may cause crooked teeth. Any injury to the jaw or mouth can interfere with your smile, whether you knock out a tooth or knock your jaw out of alignment.
When you lose a tooth, the remaining teeth begin to move into all that new space. This is your body’s way of healing, and it can happen rather quickly. If you are injured in a way that impacts your jaw or teeth, it’s important to see an orthodontist right away. They can help solve the issue before your teeth begin to shift.
Baby teeth need to be kept intact and healthy long enough to allow the permanent teeth to form properly. If your baby teeth come out too early, your permanent teeth may come up crooked and out of place. Trauma or decay can both cause a baby to lose their teeth prematurely.
Fixing crooked teeth is about much more than vanity. Over time, they can affect your overall health, and lead to discomfort and pain. You may even have trouble chewing. Wide gaps and spaces in your gums can also cause gum disease and tooth decay. It becomes more difficult to properly brush and floss when your teeth are unevenly spaced.
If money is holding you back from fixing crooked teeth, you might justify it with the high cost of other medical issues that may arise if they are left out of place. In the long run, treating issues of plaque build up and jaw pain will cost much more than straightening your teeth as soon as possible.
One of our favourite reasons to fix crooked teeth is to give you the confidence to smile. It’s a simple, beautiful expression of joy that too many people miss out on as they try to hide their teeth. Too many children and adults are self-conscious about their teeth. It’s never too late to love your smile and show it off as often as you can.
The great news is that regardless of what caused your crooked teeth, you can correct them. Whether it was your genes, a myo-functional problem, a respiratory issue, or an injury, you deserve to put it behind you and be proud of your smile. Even one crooked tooth is worth fixing if it means a healthier, more confident you.
Depending on how crooked your teeth are, your options include braces, invisible teeth aligners, or even surgery in severe cases. Consulting with an orthodontist can help you decide which option is best.
While many doctors need to take x-rays to properly examine your teeth and jaw alignment, NewSmile®'s process skips that step. The first thing we do is send you an impression kit which can be done from home whenever you have the time. It takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and our dental team use the impression to determine how long your treatment will be. From there, we will send you your aligners with instructions on how often to wear them, and you will begin seeing your smile improve.
It’s not always easy to determine what causes crooked teeth, but it’s comforting to know they can always be straightened. If you’re ready to save time and money, and start fixing your crooked teeth without everybody commenting on your braces, choose a NewSmile® plan today.

As parents, we all know how much it can mean to see our children flash their beautiful, genuine smiles. However, teens can become very self-conscious about their smiles if they have crooked teeth.
Many parents groan at the thought of having to pay for expensive traditional braces, while teenagers groan at the idea of being a “brace face” for a couple years. But NewSmile® is a revolutionary braces alternative that straightens teeth in one of the most simple, convenient and affordable ways you’ll find on the market.
First, NewSmile® sends you an impression kit to make moulds of your teen's teeth from the convenience of your own home. You won’t have to take your child out of school or miss work to come to doctor appointments with this route.
Next, you’ll send the molds back to the staff and receive a treatment preview, showing you how your teeth will look at the end of the process. Once you’ve given your approval, aligners are produced and sent to you in about two and a half weeks.
The aligners are created to gradually straighten teeth, and each set is worn for about two weeks. Though the number of sets depends on the severity of the straightening needed, most patients need about 15 aligners to reach the end goal. This means your child will have a beautiful, straight smile in just 4-6 months.
Aligners are more inconspicuous, convenient and more affordable than traditional braces. At one fourth the cost and with flexible payment plans, there’s no reason not to buy NewSmile® for your child and give them the winning smile they’ve been dreaming of.
